Professor Ruben Juanes

Professor Ruben Juanes is a geoscientist and engineer working in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at MIT. Juanes studied at the University of La Coruna in Spain before receiving his MS and PhD at UC Berkeley.

Juanes’ current research looks at the physics of multiphase flows in porous materials. His lab uses simulations and experiments to predict the flows of two or more fluids that travel through porous materials such as rocks or soils. Juanes applies his predictions to large earth processes and problems. The application of his work focuses on energy and the environment, specifically problems relating to carbon sequestration, methane hydrates, and hydrology. On his website, Juanes outlines his research areas in four main categories: methane, CO2, oil, and water.

One project that the Juanes Lab is working on is a phase-field modeling of multiphase flow. The modeling recognizes the role of thermodynamic equilibrium. Additionally, the project talks about what happens at static equilibrium and the dynamics of a multiphase flow when there is only partial wetting.
