Dr. Alex Filippenko

Alexei Filippenko is a distinguished researcher in the field of astrophysics. He received a bachelor’s in physics from the University of California, Santa Barbara and received a PhD in astronomy from the California Institute of Technology. He is currently a professor of astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley, where he continues his research.

Dr. Filippenko has a decorated past in astronomical research. He has published around 1000 research papers and has received several major awards, such as the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics (2015). He played a role in the discovery of the expanding universe and has found more than 1000 supernovae through the use of the Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope (which his research group developed themselves). Dr. Filippenko is currently focused on exploring the behaviors of progenitor stars, which are the stars that explode into a supernova. He also is investigating the different ways that supernovae can explode and has been attempting to use supernovae as indicators of distance within our expansive galaxy.

Outside of his research, Filippenko is well-liked and readily shares his knowledge with the public. He has been voted “best professor” nine times at UC Berkeley and earned the Richard H. Emmons Award for undergraduate teaching (2010). He also coauthored a highly rated astronomy textbook and has produced several video courses on introductory astronomical information. Furthermore, Filippenko has given countless lectures on his research and has appeared on over one hundred TV documentaries. Filippenko’s passion for astronomy is undeniable.
