Dr. Georgia Karagiorgi

Georgia Karagiorgi has been a professor of physics at Columbia University since 2015. She received her undergraduate degree in Physics from Florida Tech in 2004, her MA in Physics from Columbia University in 2008, and her PhD in Experimental High Energy Physics from MIT in 2010.

Georgia Karagiorgi specializes in experimental particle
physics and is currently interested in new advancements/knowledge in the neutrino sector. A neutrino is a neutrally-charged fermion that has a very small mass and is produced during nuclear fusion. Neutrinos do not have a lot to do with everyday life since they do not react with anything in the human body. The first art of Professor Karagiorgi’s research is to make better neutrino detectors that will aid future research.

The cool thing about Professor Karagiorgi’s work is that she’s interested in learning more about things that don’t necessarily directly influence the human body or human’s day-to-day life. Many scientists focus their research solely on subject matter that is prevalent to us instead of things that are just interesting.
