Dr. Malte Gather

Dr. Malte Gather

Dr. Malte Gather is a professor and researcher at the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Gather received his undergraduate education at the Imperial College London, where he studied Physics -- specifically Optics and Photonics. He then received his PhD from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cologne with his doctoral thesis entitled "Electronic, Optical and Lifetime aspects of OLEDS". He currently runs a lab -- Gather Lab at the University of St. Andrews -- with postdoctoral and PhD students in which he and his group study a wide variety of applied biophysical and biochemical projects including Organic Electronics and Plasmonics.

Currently the Gather Lab is researching the production and eventual application of organic LEDs, particularly in their possible usage in electronic devices such as laptops and smart phones. The lab uses a combination of organic electroluminescent molecules and metal oxides to produce thin, flexible LEDs which can be used to create thinner and brighter electronic displays in a wide variety of products. These LEDs also have a medical application in that they could be used in brain imaging techniques to treat neurological disorders and illnesses. They are extremely durable and can functional for long periods of time in a wide variety of biochemical conditions and solvents.
