Dr. Margaret Reid is a head researcher at the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. She currently holds multiple awards for her pioneering work and contributions to quantum theory research. She is the first female physicist to be awarded the Moyal Medal- an award that recognizes those who have made significant contributions to the late Jose Moyal’s areas of research: physics, mathematics, and statistics. As of now, her research mainly focuses on exploring the fundamental tests of quantum mechanics. These include the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox and Bell’s Theorem. In some of her latest and most intriguing work, she and her team developed a way to test for Einstein's original theory of entanglement. This test, which has since been proven, holds the potential to provide a foundation for future quantum internet- a network able to exceed the limits of our current web and internet.
Dr. Margaret Reid received her master’s in science in theoretical physics at the University of Auckland in 1984. Thereafter, she completed her Ph.D. and postdoctoral studies at the same university working also with the University of Waikato to develop her theories of squeezed light. Following this, she worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories in the United States where she was able to create the “atomic theory for the first experiment creating squeezed light.” Her major contributions to quantum mechanics represent a lot for the future of quantum internet/networking. Furthermore, her work also represents a lot for women in STEM and more specifically, women in physics.
